Since June of 1999 there has been a group of community members in Santa Barbara, California, USA who have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of this question:

"What would happen if this community were to realize its potential for Conscious Evolution?"

This group, ranging between 75 to 125 active participants, is engaged in a wide variety of activities including small resonant core groups organized around common interests, cocreative core groups working on projects and the organizational needs of the larger whole, monthly Gatherings of the Whole, Chaordic processes, evolutionary learning, sacred ceremony, and just plain having fun with music, plays, and community picnics.

Having the intention of becoming a model community and offering tools and templates for others who wish to activate their own Conscious Evolution community initiative, the SBCE Community shares in the pursuit of this statement of purpose:

"Our purpose is to be a habitat for conscious evolution. Recognizing our oneness with Spirit, we co-create with each other and Nature's Intelligence to discover and contribute our genius for self and social benefit."

Presently, in 2003, a volunteer community council is exploring the ways in which to create a self-organizing, self-governing organizational structure that provides the framework needed for coherent participation while enabling a flexibility of ideas and directions to be taken as a whole. Supporting the emergence and fulfillment of the unique creative genius of each person is a prime interest of this community as well, as evidenced by the purpose statement above.
