Creating A Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages & Intentional Communities
Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities is a unique guide to launching and sustaining successful communities--and avoiding the typical mistakes in the process. Distilling the wisdom from dozens of successful community projects, it outlines what works, what doesn't work, and how not to reinvent the wheel. It provides step-by-step, practical advice on everything from the role of founders to vision documents, decision-making, agreements, legal options, buying and financing land, sustainable site design, and communication, group process, and dealing well with conflict. Along with community profiles, cautionary tales, and ample resources for learning more, Creating a Life Together is the most up-to-date resource available on making your community dream come true. Author Diana Leafe Christian is editor of Communities magazine. Before aspiring community builders hold their first meeting, confront their first realtor, or drive their first nail, they must buy this essential book: it will improve their chances for success immensely, and will certainly save them money, time, and heartbreak. In her friendly but firm (and occasionally funny) way, Diana Christian proffers an astonishing wealth of practical information and sensible, field-tested advice. --Ernest Callenbach, author, Ecotopia and Ecotopia Emerging Wow! The newest, most comprehensive bible for builders of intentional communities. Covers every aspect with vital information and dozens of examples of how successful communities faced the challenges and created their shared lives out of their visions. --Hazel Henderson, author Creating Alternative Futures and Politics of the Solar Age (taken from the FICStore website) The book is available from the FIC Store.

New: Lakeside Castle Community in Europe
On the Swiss shores of Lake Constance, known as Europe´s heart chakra, an ambitious intentional community vision is unfolding. A core team of 15 professionals including architects, business people, artists, healers and educators, discovered a beautiful lakeside castle estate and decided it was the ideal venue for a model co-housing, alternative living and learning center. The project integrates guest and conference facilities, gourmet vegetarian meals, wellness center, alternative school, lakeshore access, hiking trails, bio-dynamic agriculture, art workshops and more. Co-ownership via shares is offered until mid October 2003. Details follow in the project description below: The Castle Glarisegg project A center for consciousness and personal development is coming into being at Castle Glarisegg. There are five areas: community, seminar-center, art-laboratory, school and alternative therapy which are linked together into an organic whole. Community In a time of fundamental social change and a global shift in consciousness a group of people has joined together who want to bring living, work and personal growth into harmony. The vision is a “place of unity”. The still growing and developing community consists of people with many different professional backgrounds like art, therapy, pedagogy, theology, craft, agriculture, computer-science, architecture and much more. The community wants to create a space where a new way of living can be explored and created. The basic intention is for each person to take his/her own responsibility in life, to care for each other and our planet and to live together in a way that is individually fulfilling, joyous, meaningful and healing. Awareness and caring as well as a practice of regular communication in the circle are fundamental to the everyday life of the community. Seminar-center The seminar-center is planned to be a holistic teaching and learning center. Both, national and international well-known teachers will offer workshops in the following fields: personal development, consciousness-work, spirituality, movement, music, art, alternative medicine and new technologies. The wide variety offered supports people to find and walk their own path. The seminar-center will be catered by our first class vegetarian restaurant. In the “culture café” one can enjoy not only culinary but also cultural delicacies like lectures, singing- and concert-evenings. Alternative Therapies The main focus in all the different therapies is the persons own healing potential. The offer contains various body-therapies, art-therapy and psychotherapy which can be combined according to individual needs. The wellness area with sauna and hot-tubs ideally supports the therapeutic work. Medicinal herbs are being cultivated in our own garden and are processed into natural remedies. Art-laboratory The art-laboratory gives artists of all different fields like dance, theatre, music, painting, sculpture, performance, etc. the space to produce, perform, exhibit and explore. Interdisciplinary projects are especially supported. Ateliers and studios are available for school and seminar-center and offer the participants the means and guidance to find their own creative impulses and expression. School The model of an interactive school for children with learning difficulties as well as highly intelligent children is in preparation. In the center of attention is the individual being of the child. In a climate of caring and cooperation learning-methods are applied that support the child’s natural drive to learn. The children are encouraged to find and follow their own interests. Castle Glarisegg with its studios, ateliers, kitchen, garden and agriculture offers great opportunities for experiencing and experimenting in an active community environment. Connecting elements Celebrations, meditations and rituals are connecting elements. Dance-parties, musicevents, circles, nature-rituals, seasonal celebrations, campfires and beach-parties are happening regularly. In the castle-shop material related to the seminars, books, magazines, postcards and handicraft-objects are being sold. The place The landscape around the castle with its own beach at Lake Constance, forest, waterfall and springs is a fertile ground for the vision to grow. Castle Glarisegg is well-situated between the two little villages Steckborn (CH) and Mammern (CH) right at the side of Lake Constance. The location with its access to the lake and forest in the back is unique. The place is easily accessible via train (station Steckborn) and car (big parking-lot). There is also a very good trafficconnection to Zurich airport (45 min.) Apart from the castle, the property contains several buildings; among others a big schoolhouse, a seminar- and culture-center, a guest house and a sports-hall. The property has also fields, forest, a stream, its own beach with a boathouse and a tennis-court. The total area of the property is 52.725 square meters. The project in the media The project has already found a big resonance in the press and television. In June more than 24 magazines will write articles about us. 1.100.000 people will be reached through our publicity-campaign until August 2003. Projekt Schloss Glarisegg Feel welcome to contact us!
